Translation Note
“Bachi” is a Japanese technical term. It means the sticks used to play Hachijo Taiko. Keep the word “bachi” exactly as written throughout the translation. Do not translate it as “drumsticks,” “sticks,” “bat,” “baton,” “mallet,” or any other word.

Striking Technique, Grip & the Physics of Sound

Overview

In Hachijo Taiko, the way you hold and use the bachi(Japanese: 太鼓の桴/ばち) affects much more than the volume of the sound.

It changes:

  • how the bachi receives the rebound from the drum,
  • how that force travels through the body,
  • how the drum vibrates,
  • the balance of harmonics in the sound,
  • how far the hand has to move,
  • and how quickly the next stroke can be made.

There is no single “correct” grip.

The important thing is to understand the relationship between fulcrum, contact point, rebound, movement, and sound.


1. Doon — Big, Open Sound

Fulcrum

Thumb + Index Finger

Grip

Hold the bachi between the thumb and index finger.

These two fingers provide a stable pivot.

Keep the other fingers open and relaxed rather than gripping the bachi tightly.

Contact

Use the side of the bachi to strike the drum face.

Keep the bachi relatively vertical and allow it to rebound naturally.

What Happens

When the side of the bachi meets the drum, the rebound is directed more vertically.

The bachi can move away from the drum freely instead of forcing the impact into the arm.

The short contact and free rebound allow the drum skin to vibrate strongly.

This produces a large, open sound with rich resonance.

Sound

Doon

A big, ringing sound.

Key Point

Do not stop the rebound. Let it happen.

The thumb and index finger provide the pivot, while the other fingers stay relaxed so the bachi can move freely.


2. Toto-toto — Small, Controlled Sound

Fulcrum

Pinky + Ring Finger

Grip

Hook the end of the bachi with the pinky and ring finger.

Let the thumb and index finger make only light contact.

The position of the fulcrum changes how the bachi moves and how it receives the force from the drum.

Contact

Use the tip of the bachi to strike the drum face closer to the edge.

Hold the bachi more horizontally.

What Happens

When the bachi meets the drum face, the drum pushes energy back into the bachi.

Where the bachi receives that force changes the direction of the rebound.

With the bachi positioned horizontally and the tip making contact, the rebound is directed more horizontally.

The player feels more of the impact through the hand and arm, so this technique requires careful control.

The result is a smaller, more precise sound.

Sound

Toto-toto

Crisp, compact, and controlled.

Key Point

Do not think of this as simply “stopping the bounce.”

Instead, change where and how the bachi receives the force.

You are controlling the rebound through the fulcrum, angle, and contact point.


3. Kaka — High, Sharp Sound / Rim Strike

Fulcrum

Pinky + Ring Finger

Grip

Hold the bachi firmly near the end with the pinky and ring finger.

The thumb and index finger make only light contact.

Contact

Strike the rim with the tip of the bachi at a sharp angle.

The rim is hard, so the rebound is strong.

What Happens

The tip of the bachi receives the impact directly.

This produces a strong, immediate rebound and a sharp attack.

The grip controls that rebound and keeps the bachi ready for the next stroke.

The tip also has an important advantage:

the hand does not have to travel as far between strokes.

A shorter movement allows the player to return the bachi quickly and prepare for the next strike.

This is especially important when playing fast patterns.

Sound

Kaka / Tata

Sharp, bright, and high.

Key Point

The tip is not used only because it produces a particular sound.

It also allows faster movement.


Side of the Bachi vs. Tip of the Bachi

The difference becomes especially clear when striking the rim.

Tip of the Bachi + Rim

The impact is concentrated at the tip.

The rebound is strong and immediate.

The sound is sharper and more focused.

Because the movement distance is relatively short, the bachi can return quickly.

This makes the tip useful for fast playing.

Side of the Bachi + Rim

The side of the bachi meets the rim instead.

The force is received differently, and the bachi moves differently.

The hand has a larger movement distance.

The resulting sound can become softer and rounder — a characteristic “pako-pako” sound rather than a sharp “kaka.”

So even when the same part of the drum is struck, changing the part of the bachi that makes contact changes both the movement and the sound.


The Physics Behind the Sound

Feel the force. Watch the movement. Listen to the harmonics.

This is not about memorizing three different grips.

The important thing is understanding how the fulcrum, contact point, angle, and rebound work together.

When the drum pushes energy back into the bachi, the way that force is received changes the direction of the rebound.

That changes how the bachi moves, how the force travels through the body, how the drum vibrates, and how the harmonics are balanced in the sound.

It also changes the distance the hand needs to travel and how quickly the bachi can return for the next stroke.

Fulcrum → Contact Point → Angle → Rebound → Vibration → Harmonics → Movement → Speed

The sound is the result of this whole physical relationship.

So don’t just memorize the grip.

Feel the fulcrum.
Feel the force.
Watch the movement.
Listen to the sound.
